Moving to Twickenham at the age of 17 was the catalyst for Rebecca’s career in rowing. She quickly excelled and within eight months was selected for Great Britain for the 1998 Junior World Championships. The championship ended in disqualification for a steering violation, Rebecca was not deterred and a couple years later she brought home the under 23 World Championship in the pair.
After a couple years with credible finishes at the senior World Championships, Rebecca narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the double sculls in 2003.Senior success was soon to follow in the quadruple sculls and in 2004 Rebecca won a Silver medal at the Olympics games narrowly missing out to a more experienced German team.
2005 saw a re-match with Germany and with a newly formed quad sculls team, Rebecca and the Great British team were triumphant to become World Champions.
A persistent injury slowed Rebecca’s ability to build on her outstanding achievements in rowing. Considering retirement from rowing to pursue a career in marketing communications, Rebecca received a twist of fate.
British Cycling contacted her. She was then put through a testing procedure and told she had the potential to succeed at a high level in cycling. She now had a new goal; competing at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in cycling.
Just five months into training and Rebecca competed in her first major competition. To the surprise of the cycling world Rebecca became British time trial champion in her first cycling event.
Rebecca continued her fantastic progress in cycling in 2007 by becoming British Champion in the 3KM individual pursuit 2007 followed by a Silver medal at the world championships.
2008 was the year Rebecca reached the top; she went one better and was crowned world champion in the 3KM individual pursuit. Rebecca wasn’t content with this achievement and decided to make history later that year; by becoming the only British woman and second only woman ever to win medals in two different sports at the Summer Olympic games.
What next for Rebecca? Rebecca’s journey is far from over as talk switches to the London 2012 games. Not content with the records she has already broke, Rebecca is considering taking up yet another sport and dreams of performing in athletics in the main stadium.
